RenRe names Carr Global Head, Climate & Sustainability Strategy

RenaissanceRe, the Bermuda headquartered reinsurance underwriting firm and third-party capital manager has appointed long-serving employee and former global property catastrophe head Cathal Carr to lead its climate and sustainability strategy.
Carr became Senior Vice President Underwriting and Global Head of the Climate & Sustainability Strategy at RenaissanceRe (RenRe) this month.
He joined the reinsurer back in 2005 and has held increasingly senior roles, working in both Dublin, Ireland and Bermuda for RenRe.
Carr was most recently Global Head of Property Catastrophe at RenRe, a role he took on in 2019.
Prior to that, Carr worked as the Head of Bermuda Property for two years at the company.
In these two most recent roles, Carr will have helped to set the strategy in property catastrophe reinsurance and retrocession, with underwriting oversight of portfolios that will have been shared with RenRe’s third-party capital partners as well, we assume.
With climate and sustainability becoming critical factors of insurance-linked securities (ILS) investing, while allocators to the ILS space and to reinsurance in general become increasingly focused on environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategies, Carr’s new role will likely see him working alongside the RenaissanceRe Capital Partners team to deliver solutions for the firm’s third-party investor partners.
Originally, Carr joined RenRe in 2005 as a Risk Analyst based in Dublin, working his way up through increasingly senior underwriting roles and spending time in Bermuda since 2009.
Carr has now returned to be based in Dublin, Ireland, according to his Linkedin profile.
